Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has commenced the trial operation of the world's first electric abra, created using 3D printing technology in collaboration with the private sector.
This innovative abra, capable of carrying 20 passengers, maintains the traditional design while embracing modern manufacturing techniques. The initiative aligns with Dubai's 3D printing strategy, aiming to reduce manufacturing time by 90%, cut costs by 30%, and lower operation and maintenance expenses by 30%. It also supports RTA's environmental sustainability goals for maritime transport.
The abra was manufactured by Al Seer Marine Company in Abu Dhabi, with global partners such as Mitsubishi providing materials, Siemens overseeing the programming and calibration of the 3D printer, and Torqeedo supplying the electric motors. The TASNEEF Company ensured the manufacturing process met safety standards.
RTA is also upgrading traditional abra stations in Dubai Creek to enhance marine transport services, improve safety and security standards, and comply with the Dubai Universal Design Code for People of Determination. The project aims to elevate the overall appearance and functionality of abra stations, which serve 14+ million passengers annually.
The project includes the refurbishment of 4 traditional abra stations. The Bur Dubai Marine Transport Station was upgraded in February 2023, and the Deira Old Souq Station followed in February 2024. The Dubai Old Souq Station and Al Sabkha Station are scheduled for completion by August 2025. Upgrades involve replacing floating docks to ensure passenger safety, providing retail spaces for better customer service, facilities for employees and operators, and bike racks to enhance transport integration.
Improvements will also include expanding and enhancing passenger waiting areas with priority seating for People of Determination, increasing docking spaces by 15%, doubling shaded waiting areas, and expanding commercial spaces by 27%. The project will use sustainable, low-cost materials to reduce annual maintenance costs by 10%.
The marine transport sector in Dubai has experienced significant growth in transport means, stations, and passenger numbers since the completion of the Dubai Water Canal, which connects Dubai Creek to the coastal area. This growth is expected to continue with the development of urban and tourist facilities along the canal and the construction of additional marine transport stations, making marine transport a preferred choice for navigating and enjoying Dubai's scenic waterways.
