Graphite Innovations & Technologies Inc/GIT Coatings (graphene-based coatings manufacturer) has partnered with Coral Expeditions Australia/fleet to implement a groundbreaking combination of robotic hull grooming and graphene-based hard foul release coatings on the Coral Adventurer ship. This initiative marks a first for the global cruise industry.
During the drydocking in April 2024, the 120-passenger Coral Adventurer was initially treated with GIT’s graphene-based hard foul release coatings, including XGIT-FUEL for the hull and XGIT-PROP for the propellers. XGIT-FUEL, a graphene-based hard foul release hull coating, creates an ultra-low friction surface to enhance vessel efficiency and incorporates patented XGIT technology to deter biofouling. This technology has also been adopted by the Finnish passenger operator Finnlines for its ro-ro and ro-pax fleets. XGIT-PROP, a durable graphene-based coating for propellers, improves vessel performance by maintaining a smooth propeller surface over time, thus enhancing Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) ratings. In March, the dry bulk company Pacific Basin applied this coating across their fleet.
During the application process, Coral Expeditions Managing Director Mark Fifield highlighted the extended lifespan of the coating, reduced maintenance intervals, and consistent performance due to the ultra-low friction surface. He also emphasized the biocide-free nature of GIT Coatings' sustainable foul-release technology, which does not release harmful toxins like copper and silicone oils into the ocean. This technology reduces carbon emissions, reflecting Coral Expeditions' commitment to pioneering sustainable practices within the expedition cruising sector.
Coral Expeditions sought a biocide-free coating combined with a grooming solution to keep the hull free of fouling while adhering to biofouling regulations. This approach has resulted in less time in dry dock and maintained schedule adherence for cruise passengers. In collaboration, GIT and Coral Expeditions developed an easy-to-maintain grooming schedule aligned with the company’s operations.
The Australian Hull Biofouling Management Regulation, now in effect, requires international vessels arriving in Australia to proactively manage biofouling to minimize the transfer of invasive species. Three months after the application of the hard coating, Coral Expeditions has confirmed the use of a grooming robot to keep Coral Adventurer clean, further emphasizing their commitment to sustainable marine technology.
