On Sunday, August 11th, climate activists from Extinction Rebellion once again targeted the IJmuiden lock (Netherlands), disrupting the passage of the cruise ship Seven Seas Mariner, operated by RSSC-Regent Seven Seas Cruises.
The protest, which delayed the ship's arrival in Amsterdam by several hours, involved 8 activists who chained and glued themselves to the lock gate, effectively blocking the vessel’s passage.
Despite initial attempts at negotiation, the situation required intervention by the Mobile Eenheid (ME), a specialized police unit trained to manage physically restrained protesters.
The lock was reopened at 8:30 p.m., allowing the Seven Seas Mariner to continue, reaching Amsterdam ~10:00 p.m.
Extinction Rebellion framed the protest as a demonstration against the perceived excesses of the cruise industry, highlighting concerns over global inequality and the environmental impact of such vessels.
No arrests were made during the incident, which followed a similar protest at the same location just days earlier.
