A TUI Cruises advertisement has been prohibited by a German court for being misleading.
The Regional Court of Hamburg ruled in favor of the German Environmental Aid (plaintiff), determining that the phrase "2050 net-zero cruise operation" used in the advertisement was deceptive.
The court concluded that the ad implied TUI Cruises would completely eliminate emissions from its operations by 2050, a claim made without sufficient evidence, according to reports from the German media outlet ASB News.
The ruling comes amid a broader scrutiny of environmental claims in advertisements, similar to actions taken by the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
The ASA has recently upheld complaints against several companies, including HX/Hurtigruten Expeditions, for making unsubstantiated sustainability claims in their ads.
Airlines have also been criticized for using misleading environmental statements in their marketing campaigns.
