The Canaveral Port Authority has decided to withdraw its plans for a new cruise terminal, which was intended to accommodate larger vessels. The decision followed a letter from state leaders expressing concerns and suggesting a shift in focus toward supporting the space industry and cargo operations at the port.
Micah Loyd, chairman of the Canaveral Port Authority, noted that the state emphasized the need for a balanced approach, ensuring that space, cargo, commercial fishing, and cruising interests are all considered equally. Loyd stated there is no one interest, whether it be space, cargo, commercial fishing, cruising, that is more important than the other.
John Murray, CEO for the Port Authority, acknowledged the ongoing need for an additional cruise terminal but emphasized the importance of maintaining harmony among the port’s diverse stakeholders. Murray said they are a very diverse port and it is a challenge to keep all the interests happy at all times.
Local businesses like Ludz BBQ, which thrive on port activity, are remaining optimistic despite the reversal of the terminal plans. Brenda Bernard, the owner of Ludz BBQ, expressed confidence that her business would continue to benefit from port traffic, even without the new terminal. She highlighted the importance of seizing existing opportunities to support the community and keep her business connected.
Murray reiterated his commitment to fostering economic growth in Central Florida, balancing the needs of various industries to ensure continued success for the region.
