Windstar Cruises commenced voyages to the Marquesas Islands in 2024, offering travelers a rare opportunity to explore this remote South Pacific destination, which receives only a few thousand visitors annually. In July, the Marquesas gained international acclaim by being designated as one of UNESCO’s newest World Heritage sites.
To honor this recognition, Windstar is hosting a special celebratory cruise departing on September 26th, 2024, featuring Windstar’s French Polynesian Attache, Hironui Johnston, and 3 mayors from the Marquesas Islands. A second celebratory sailing is scheduled for March 27th, 2025, with suites available for booking on both dates.
UNESCO recognized the Marquesas for its striking geography, remote location, and its surrounding waters, which are considered among the world’s last true marine wilderness areas. The islands were also noted for their unique culture and heritage.
With 36+ years of experience sailing in French Polynesia, Windstar has built strong relationships with local officials, enabling them to expand their itineraries to include the Marquesas, bringing the total number of South Pacific islands visited by the company to 11.
Windstar’s year-round cruises, which also cover the Society Islands and the Tuamotus, immerse guests in French Polynesian culture with the presence of a designated cultural ambassador on each voyage. All itineraries feature a complimentary Bora Bora Celebration Destination Discovery Event - a private beach feast with local performances, including music and fire dancing. Onboard, guests can enjoy local food and beverages, while curated shore excursions led by locals provide deeper cultural insights.
During the September 26 celebration sailing, the mayors of Ua Huka, Fatu Hiva, and Tahuata will share their experiences in the UNESCO recognition process. They will discuss rahui, a traditional method of resource management, the collaborative efforts among Marquesas’ leaders, and their initiatives to empower future generations in conservation. The cruise will also feature onboard workshops, including traditional lei crafting, Haka Manu (Bird Dance) lessons, and culinary demonstrations on Marquesan dishes like I’a mito and Keukeu.
Additionally, professional photographers Pat and Rosemarie Keough will offer photography workshops designed to help guests capture the islands’ stunning landscapes and vibrant marine life.
