The world's largest cruise shipowner - Carnival Corporation & plc, announced the roof installation of solar panels at two of its Barcelona cruise terminals, marking a significant step in integrating renewable energy into Port's operations.
The solar panels, a first for Port Barcelona, are being installed at Palacruceros (Terminal D) and Helix Cruise Center (Terminal E) and will generate more than 100% of the energy required for daily operations, reducing overall electricity consumption.
In collaboration with a Catalonia-based solar provider, 1350 solar panels are being installed across both terminals, with the project expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The panels will produce 866,000+ kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually. Any surplus power - estimated at 32% for Helix Cruise Center - will be fed back into the city power grid, contributing an additional 245,000 kWh per year, equivalent to the energy needs of 60 households.
This initiative follows Carnival’s recent launch of a solar panel farm at its Amber Cove Cruise Center in Dominicana and reflects the corporation’s broader commitment to expanding renewable energy use across its global ports and destinations. Port Barcelona, a key Mediterranean trade hub, has also been at the forefront of environmental innovation, with facilities supporting liquefied natural gas and emission-reduction strategies.
Carnival Corporation’s 8 cruise lines will continue to call at Barcelona throughout the year, benefiting from these sustainable developments.
