The Port of Tenerife (Canary Islands) on September 30th marked a significant milestone with the inaugural docking of the Sun Princess, a cutting-edge vessel from the Princess Cruises fleet, consigned by PAHO. This event underscores Tenerife’s strategic role as a key destination for high-capacity and environmentally sustainable cruise ships.
The Sun Princess, capable of accommodating 4,300 passengers and staffed by a crew of ~1,600, distinguishes itself through innovative design and advanced energy efficiency. During her visit to Tenerife, the ship conducted a liquefied natural gas (LNG) refueling operation, highlighting the port’s capability to support cleaner, sustainable fuels.
In recognition of the Sun Princess’s first docking, the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife presented a commemorative plaque to Captain Craig Street, a seasoned veteran with 34+ years of experience with Princess Cruises. The event also allowed port officials to tour the vessel's modern facilities, which merge luxury with a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability.
This docking is a key achievement in the Port of Tenerife’s commitment to sustainability and its capacity to host large, advanced cruise ships. The Sun Princess' arrival from Santa Cruz de La Palma, carrying 1,183 passengers and 781 crew members, further solidifies Tenerife’s standing as a preferred port for cruise lines seeking destinations equipped for future challenges.
The plaque exchange ceremony was conducted in the absence of Captain Luca Manzi, with Staff Captain Goran Pamukovic standing in. The Port Authority was represented by Miguel A. Luna from the Commercial Department, accompanied by Laura Gonzalez (Port Operations Agent, Intercruises Shoreside & Port Services) and Hilary Sullivan (Social Hostess at Oceania Cruises).
