PONANT has been awarded substantial financial support from the European Commission’s INNOVFUND to advance its pioneering Swap2Zero project, a first-of-its-kind endeavor to launch a carbon-neutral transoceanic vessel.
The funding, sourced from the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), is among the largest globally dedicated to accelerating low-carbon technology in the maritime sector.
This funding signifies recognition of PONANT's commitment to maritime decarbonization and its leadership in advancing innovative green energy technologies within the cruise industry. The Swap2Zero project aligns with ambitious goals laid out by the EU and France’s 2030 and CORIMER ‘Green Ship’ programs, aiming for a net-zero emission shipping industry by 2050. The project has garnered additional support from the French government and the French Public Investment Bank (BPI), further solidifying its potential for industry-wide replicability and advancing the decarbonization objectives of the maritime sector.
Under the direction of Mathieu Petiteau, PONANT’s R&D and New Build division has developed 6 breakthrough decarbonization technologies, creating a comprehensive system for achieving zero CO₂ emissions during operation and a one-month energy autonomy.
Key innovations include:
- A sail-powered system contributing to 50% of the vessel's propulsion via wind energy;
- Over 1,000 m² of advanced, eco-designed photovoltaic panels manufactured in France;
- Low-temperature fuel cells powered by liquid hydrogen for primary propulsion, with recycled water and heat outputs;
- High-temperature fuel cells dedicated to onboard hotel loads, with heat recovery for hot water production;
- Integrated carbon capture technology paired with the high-temperature fuel cells;
- A custom energy management system that enables efficient power distribution without reliance on traditional generators.
PONANT's progress with Swap2Zero not only underscores its commitment to carbon-neutral cruising but also strengthens its leadership role in maritime sustainability, contributing toward a decarbonized fleet by 2030. This initiative positions PONANT at the forefront of sustainable tourism and sets a precedent in low-impact maritime innovation.
