The first of two new ferries for Spirit of Tasmania, completed at RMC/Rauma Marine Constructions in Rauma Finland, will soon set sail - not for Tasmania, but for a temporary stationing in Leith, Scotland UK.
The relocation follows TT-Line’s decision to avoid Baltic Sea's current ice conditions, which could pose operational challenges.
Bernard Dwyer (TT-Line's CEO) explained that the Spirit of Tasmania IV ship was “not designed for the extreme ambient temperatures expected” as Baltic ice packs form later in November. He noted that to ensure the vessel’s safety and preservation, they are relocating to Scotland, where conditions are more suitable.
The construction timeline for the second vessel - the sistership Spirit of Tasmania V, remains unaffected, with both Ro-Pax ships set to join TT-Line’s fleet as scheduled.
Jeremy Rockliff (Tasmania's Premier) recently confirmed TT-Line’s exploration of leasing or chartering options for the Spirit of Tasmania IV while awaiting the completion of suitable berths in Devonport.
Dwyer added that the company continues to “explore opportunities” for the vessel’s deployment during its stationing in Leith.
