AmaWaterways will soon introduce cruising to Colombia’s Magdalena River with the launch of AmaMagdalena - the first of two purpose-built new boats set to sail this historic waterway.

AmaMagdalena is scheduled for her inaugural voyage on March 15th, 2025, with AmaMelodia to follow in June 2025. Both vessels are currently under construction, while AmaWaterways prepares the necessary infrastructure to support operations in this new destination.

Originally planned for November 2024, the maiden season was delayed to further develop the route, with AmaWaterways President Rudi Schreiner noting that this is the first time a major river cruise line is offering a journey of this nature on the Magdalena River.

AmaMagdalena will host 60 guests and the AmaMelodia 64 guests, each vessel measuring 223 feet (68 m) in length and 43 feet (13 m) in width, with staterooms ranging from 237 to 306 square feet (22 to 28 m2). True to the AmaWaterways brand, both ships will offer refined dining across multiple venues, including unlimited wine, beer, and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, as well as a complimentary cocktail hour. Guests will be treated to Latin American cuisine in the Main Restaurant, open-air dining in the Main Lounge, and an exclusive Chef’s Table experience. Additionally, a Colombian chef will helm a 16-seat restaurant, creating local specialties.

AmaWaterways has collaborated with local communities to establish the needed infrastructure, including a fleet of nine specially designed excursion boats to facilitate exploration. Guided excursions will allow guests to experience Colombia’s biodiversity, culture, and history, with options including bird-watching, historical tours, and small-boat journeys.

The Magdalena River itineraries feature 2 distinct 7-night routes.

The “Wonders of Colombia” itinerary sails between Cartagena and Barranquilla, while the “Magic of Colombia” route cruises in the opposite direction.

Each itinerary offers cultural excursions and onboard experiences like tastings of tropical fruits, rum, and Colombian coffee, with optional pre- and post-cruise extensions in various cities for an enriched travel experience.
