RCI-Royal Caribbean's ship Explorer OTS encounters severe storm during Transatlantic crossing from Europe to Florida

   November 11, 2024 ,   Accidents

Severe weather disrupted RCI-Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas during her transatlantic voyage from Barcelona (Spain) to Miami (Florida USA), leading to a brief but intense scene onboard.

While crossing the Castilian coast, winds escalated sharply from 46 mph (20.56 m/s) to a gusting 86 mph (38.45 m/s), prompting onboard precautions. The strong winds caused items to tumble from bar shelves, merchandise to fall in shops, and even overturned a table in the casino. Passengers were briefly confined to their cabins while crew conducted accountability checks.

During the incident, one passenger sustained injuries, requiring medical attention ashore. This led the Explorer OTS to make an unscheduled stop at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) to facilitate the patient's medical disembarkation, though no additional details have been provided on the passenger's condition.

The vessel remained docked Friday at Ponta Delgada (Azores) past the Straits of Gibraltar.

Explorer OTS is scheduled to arrive in PortMiami in 2 weeks, continuing her scheduled journey after the delay.
