MSC Cruises is exploring new designs for its vessels, aiming to surpass the currently largest WORLD-class ships.
The company's Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago, speaking during a visit to the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard/STX France (in Saint-Nazaire) where MSC World America is under construction, revealed that discussions are ongoing with shipyards in Finland, Italy, and France to design the next generation MSC liners. He emphasized MSC'ss ambition to "raise the bar" with these future vessels.
This disclosure comes amid industry speculation that MSC may be considering ships larger than Royal Caribbean’s ICON-class, currently the world's biggest by volume and capacity. However, a spokesperson for MSC clarified that no formal agreements or announcements have been made regarding a new ship class.
Meanwhile, MSC World America, the second unit in MSC's WORLD class series, is set to debut in April 2025. The 6762-passenger vessel will be deployed in the Caribbean and homeported in Miami Florida.
Since 2000, Chantiers de l’Atlantique/STX France has built 18 ships for MSC Cruises, underscoring a long-standing partnership.
Lynn Torrent, Chief Commercial Officer of MSC Cruises USA, explained that MSC World America blends European design with American comforts, providing a unique experience for passengers. Torrent also highlighted the ship’s appeal to a global audience, with the line anticipating international guests upon its arrival in Miami.
Vago noted the strength of the British market for MSC, referencing a surge in bookings for the line’s inaugural Alaska cruises, which are proving popular among European, particularly British, travelers. Sailings from Southampton, fly-cruises on MSC World Europa, and destinations such as Bridgetown and New York City have also contributed to the UK’s growth as a key market. Vago anticipates employing similar strategies to promote MSC World America.
Looking ahead, MSC’s World class fleet will expand further with MSC World Asia, expected to enter service in 2026.
Plans for a 4th and possibly a 5th vessel in the WORLD class are also under consideration, as MSC continues to solidify its position as a major global player with a localized approach to cruise tourist engagement.
