Fred Olsen Cruise Lines’ ship Balmoral will enter drydock in December for a 2-week refurbishment at A&P Falmouth, part of the APCL Group. This marks the 5th collaboration between the UK-based Fred Olsen and the shipyard, which has previously conducted routine maintenance on Bolette and Balmoral.
The scope of work includes:
- Hull Maintenance: Ultra-high-pressure water blasting and the application of silicone-based paint to enhance fuel efficiency.
- Propulsion and Stability Systems: Overhauls of the propellers, bow thrusters, stabilizers, and the main engine gearbox.
- Safety Equipment: Servicing lifeboats, davits, cranes, and sea valves.
- Deck and Mechanical Systems: Overhauls of mooring winches, fans, and motors.
Samantha Stimpson (Fred Olsen’s CEO) expressed the company’s satisfaction with the ongoing partnership, noting that working with a UK-based shipyard reinforces their commitment to contributing to the local economy and fostering skills development through A&P's apprenticeship programs. She emphasized the importance of dry dock periods for ensuring the continued maintenance of Balmoral and introducing enhancements to improve guest experiences.
The contract signing for this project occurred in Liverpool in September. A&P Falmouth’s Managing Director, Mike Spicer, highlighted the yard’s strategic location in the southwest of England as a key factor in attracting cruise ship maintenance contracts. He added that such agreements not only strengthen the yard’s reputation in the maritime industry but also provide economic benefits to the region, including employment and training opportunities.
David McGinley, Chief Executive of APCL Group, underscored the group’s ability to deliver complex maintenance projects on tight schedules. He noted that their strategic locations and technical expertise allow them to minimize downtime for Fred. Olsen’s fleet.
A&P Falmouth is part of a wider network of facilities under the APCL Group, including A&P Tyne and Cammell Laird, which have also carried out significant refits for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines in recent years. The upcoming work on Balmoral is part of the cruise line’s ongoing efforts to maintain its fleet to high operational and guest satisfaction standards.
