Saudi Arabia’s Aroya Cruises is set to launch its inaugural vessel, the Manara, following extensive preparations that began in 2023. Originally delivered in 2017 as the World Dream by Meyer Werft for Dream Cruises, the ship has undergone a comprehensive transformation to suit its new operational focus in the Red Sea and beyond.
The Manara departed Bremerhaven (Germany) today, November 25th, following substantial conversion work tailored to her new market. These modifications included time at a Rotterdam shipyard and additional updates completed at a Bremerhaven container terminal. The redesign reflects a shift from the ship’s original concept for Asian guests to a culturally aligned and premium experience designed to appeal to Arab travelers.
The vessel’s first stop will be Limassol (Cyprus) with an expected arrival on December 3rd, 2024. The Manara will then proceed to Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) where she will officially commence operations on December 16th, 2024.
Stationed in Jeddah, the Manara will initially operate cruises within the Red Sea, showcasing the region’s cultural, natural, and historical attractions. Aroya Cruises has plans to expand itineraries to include destinations across the Arabian Peninsula, the Orient, and the Mediterranean, offering a diverse range of experiences for its passengers.
This venture marks Saudi Arabia’s commitment to positioning itself as a prominent player in the global cruise industry, with the support of Cruise Saudi, the entity that acquired the World Dream following Dream Cruises’ bankruptcy.
Aroya Cruises has secured the expertise of seasoned industry professionals to guide its entry into the competitive cruise market. Key leaders include Lars Clasen, former president of AIDA Cruises, and Jorg Rudolph, previously Costa Cruises’ Germany manager and now President and CEO of Aroya Cruises. Their extensive experience will play a critical role in shaping the brand’s identity and ensuring operational success.
The World Dream was initially constructed to cater to Asian clientele, with designs, services, and amenities reflecting that market’s preferences. Over the past 18 months, the ship has been reimagined to align with the cultural expectations and tastes of Arab travelers, ensuring comfort, authenticity, and a high-end cruising experience.
The launch of the Manara represents not only the debut of Aroya Cruises but also a significant step in Saudi Arabia’s broader ambitions to diversify its tourism offerings and establish a foothold in the maritime travel sector.
