The expedition vessel mv Ortelius has successfully navigated the challenging waters of the Weddell Sea, enabling tourists to visit the emperor penguin colony at Snow Hill Island via helicopter. This achievement reinforces Oceanwide Expeditions' (fleet) reputation as a major player in the Antarctic cruise market.

On November 25th, 2024, the ship, operated by the polar cruising specialist with 30+ years of experience, facilitated its second successful landing at the Snow Hill Island colony this season. Despite formidable ice conditions, Ortelius approached within 14.8 nautical miles of the island, offering a clear view of the penguin colony. Passengers were then transported by helicopter to witness emperor penguins and their newly fledged chicks, a rare opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers. Adding to the excitement, ~20 emperor penguins approached the ship at night, providing an unexpected and intimate encounter.

This success, achieved under the challenging conditions of Antarctica, underscores Oceanwide's operational flexibility and innovative approach. The company highlighted that while alternative plans were prepared in case ice or weather conditions proved insurmountable, the ice-strengthened Ortelius and its helicopters ensured the original itinerary could proceed as planned.

MV Ortelius has set a notable precedent this season, becoming the first expedition vessel to enter the Weddell Sea in 2024. This achievement is a testament to the expertise of the crew and the ingenuity of Oceanwide’s operations. The company credited the dedication of Captain Per Andersson and Expedition Leader Sara Jenner for delivering this remarkable experience to guests.

Oceanwide Expeditions’ approach to exploration is marked by its ability to adapt to the dynamic polar environment. By employing ice-strengthened vessels and helicopters, the company brings guests closer to unique wildlife encounters in some of the world’s most remote regions.

Later this season, Oceanwide will return to the Weddell Sea for its "Remote Weddell Sea Explorer" itinerary. The company aims to continue offering extraordinary opportunities for travelers to connect with the Antarctic wilderness, including potential visits to Snow Hill Island’s emperor penguins in the upcoming season.
