The UK-based Fred Olsen Cruise Lines has resumed operations from Portsmouth England this November, launching a winter season of voyages on the Borealis ship.
The upcoming itineraries include destinations such as Arctic Norway, Portugal, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean, and North Africa/Morocco. Guests will have the opportunity to experience natural wonders like the Northern Lights, enjoy festive celebrations in Madeira, and observe marine wildlife in tropical waters.
Martin Lister (Fred Olsen’s Head of Product Innovation) highlighted the company’s return to Portsmouth, noting its convenient location on the south coast as an ideal departure point for winter cruises. He emphasized that the itineraries are designed to offer a variety of experiences, from exploring volcanic landscapes in the Canary Islands to engaging with the local Sami culture in Norway. Other highlights include learning flamenco in Cadiz and participating in New Year’s Eve celebrations in Funchal Madeira.
Portsmouth International Port’s Head of Cruise and Ferry, Andrew Williamson, expressed enthusiasm for Fred. Olsen’s return, recognizing the cruise line’s significant role in the port’s busiest year to date. He pointed out the environmental advancements at the port, including a new carbon-neutral terminal, as a fitting match for Borealis, which has been a frequent visitor since 2022.
Councillor Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, remarked on the long-standing relationship between the city and Fred. Olsen. He underscored the importance of the partnership, highlighting how it supports the port’s boutique cruise offering and contributes to local services through the port’s profits.
Looking ahead, Borealis will continue its presence in Portsmouth through 2025 with five additional sailings, including a 5-night Mystery Cruise. Two further voyages are already planned for 2026, solidifying the vessel’s role in Portsmouth’s cruise operations.
