Avalon Alegria ship, purpose-built for operations on the Douro River in Portugal, is the latest addition to Avalon Waterways’ fleet and the first of the brand's Suite Ships to operate in Portugal.
The new boat combines luxury accommodations, thoughtful amenities, and immersive itineraries for a unique travel experience along one of Europe’s most picturesque waterways.
With a capacity of 102 guests, Avalon Alegria has 51 passenger cabins (14 Deluxe Staterooms and 37 Panorama Suites), each designed with a palette inspired by the Douro's natural surroundings. The interiors pair dark woods, lush greens, and mustard yellows with copper accents, creating an atmosphere of understated elegance.
The 200-ft2 Panorama Suites are 30% larger than the industry standard and feature floor-to-ceiling windows that transform the space into an open-air balcony when fully retracted.
Avalon Alegria offers a range of facilities designed to enhance the cruising experience. The Fitness Centre provides guided exercise classes, while the Adventure Centre offers active excursions led by Avalon’s Adventure Hosts.
Complimentary Wi-Fi ensures connectivity throughout the journey, a feature not commonly offered by many cruise lines.
Social spaces include the Club Lounge at the ship’s aft, where guests can enjoy hot beverages and panoramic views, and the Observation Lounge at the bow, an outdoor space outfitted with plush furniture and swing seating. These areas provide inviting spots to unwind while taking in the stunning scenery of the Douro Valley.
Avalon Alegria’s 8-day itinerary showcases the Douro Valley's terraced vineyards, historic villages, and cultural landmarks. Departing from Porto, guests explore Portugal’s culinary and viticultural heritage with visits to local wineries, family-owned farms, and the UNESCO-listed Coa Valley. Encounters with Fado music and regional delicacies add depth to the experience, culminating in a return to Porto to explore its vibrant culture.
In addition to its offerings in Portugal, Avalon Waterways has expanded its European itineraries with voyages through France’s Bordeaux region on Avalon Artistry II ship. These itineraries traverse the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers, with options to extend with cruises to the Seine, Saone, Rhone, and Rhine Rivers. Guests are treated to visits at historic chateaux and wine tastings, delving into the rich traditions of one of the world’s most renowned wine regions.
With Avalon Alegria and its expanded itineraries, Avalon Waterways continues to refine the art of river cruising. By blending innovative ship design with culturally immersive itineraries, the company provides guests with opportunities to experience Europe’s landscapes, heritage, and gastronomy in unparalleled comfort.
