South Sea Cruises Group (SSCG), a prominent operator in Fiji's marine tourism sector, has acquired Tivua Island from Captain Cook Cruises Management. Under the agreement, Captain Cook Cruises will continue operating its Tivua Island Day Sail Experience until May 31st, 2025.
Following this period, SSCG will close Tivua Island for a comprehensive redevelopment aimed at transforming the destination into a world-class day trip experience. The project will align with the growing demand for premium leisure activities fueled by an influx of hotel and resort developments in the Nadi and Denarau regions.
SSCG’s redevelopment of Tivua Island aims to elevate its appeal as a premier attraction for international visitors staying in the nearby resort areas. The upgraded island will feature improved on-site facilities, enabling guests to enjoy one of Fiji’s finest beaches and explore its extensive coral gardens.
This transformation is positioned to meet increasing demand for high-quality day trip experiences among tourists seeking to explore Fiji’s natural beauty. SSCG plans to share further details of the redevelopment in the coming months, with the revamped Tivua Island slated to reopen in 2026.
The acquisition of Tivua Island expands SSCG’s portfolio, which already includes some of Fiji’s most visited day trip destinations such as South Sea Island and Malamala Beach Club. The group also operates Sabre by South Sea Sailing and is set to launch a new high-speed boat experience under the South Sea Cats brand in April 2025.
SSCG’s operations extend beyond day trips, including Blue Lagoon Cruises, Fiji’s only locally owned and operated small-ship cruise line, and a range of travel packages through its Awesome Adventures Fiji brand. The group also manages resort transfers and day trips across the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands as part of its South Sea Cruises offerings.
With the redevelopment of Tivua Island, SSCG reinforces its commitment to providing exceptional marine tourism experiences in Fiji. The project is expected to complement Fiji’s tourism infrastructure boom while solidifying SSCG’s position as a leader in the region’s travel industry.
