The fully electric passenger ferry Orbit Clipper is set to debut on the River Thames in March 2025, marking the UK's first zero-emissions river crossing service.

Operated by Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, the vessel will connect Canary Wharf on the north bank with Rotherhithe on the south, aiming to accommodate the increasing commuter and residential demand in East London.

The Orbit Clipper, constructed by Wight Shipyard Co on the Isle of Wight, is designed to carry up to 150 passengers and is expected to transport 150,000+ passengers weekly.

The cross-river service will operate at high frequency, with crossings every 10 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes on weekends. The new ship replaces the existing cross-river service, aligning with the area's evolving infrastructure needs.

Sean Collins, co-founder and CEO of Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, emphasized the vessel's innovative and sustainable features, highlighting its UK-built design and advanced green technology. He noted that the Thames remains central to London's growth, and the company's efforts reflect a commitment to furthering sustainable transportation on the river.

The ferry will incorporate self-docking technology, described by Tim Beckett, director of maritime engineering consultancy Beckett Rankine, as a groundbreaking advancement. Beckett also pointed to the growing demand for cross-river connections as East London continues its expansion.

Supporting infrastructure work will commence in January, including the construction of a new pier at Rotherhithe and the extension of the existing pier at Canary Wharf. The Orbit Clipper will also cater to cyclists, with space for up to 100 bicycles per crossing.

The project has been made possible through funding from the UK Department for Transport and Innovate UK, as part of the nation's broader strategy to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050.
