MS Disney Treasure is set to depart on the maiden voyage from Port Canaveral (Florida USA) on December 21st, signaling a significant fleet expansion for DCL-Disney Cruise Line.
The large vessel (volume 144,256 GT-tons) is part of Walt Disney’s plan to introduce 7 new ships by 2031, effectively doubling the DCL fleet.
Disney Treasure was christened in a ceremony led by Disney CEO Bob Iger, featuring a spectacular drone display of 1000+ drones creating characters from Disney films such as Aladdin and Moana, accompanied by iconic Disney music. Singer Jordin Sparks also performed an original song composed specifically for the ship.
DCL's fleet expansion continues with MS Disney Adventure (entering service in December 2025, homeported in Singapore) and MS Disney Destiny (slated to join DCL in November 2025, homeported in Fort Lauderdale FL USA).
DCL’s broader investment strategy, announced in 2022, includes nearly doubling its expenditure on theme parks and cruise shipping operations to US$60 billion over the next decade.
The Walt Disney Company’s maritime investments come amid challenges in its traditional TV business, which has seen a steady decline. For 2024-Q3, profits from Disney's networks, including ABC and cable channels, fell by 38% to US$498 million, with revenue decreasing 6% to $2.5 billion. Despite these setbacks, Disney has reported better-than-anticipated earnings for the quarter and a strong growth outlook for the next 3 years.
This optimism has buoyed Disney’s stock, which has risen over 28% in 2023, giving the company a valuation of US$211 billion.
Disney Cruise Line's expansion represents a critical element in the entertainment giant’s broader strategy to diversify revenue streams and solidify its position in the experiential leisure market.
