Cherbourg (France) is set to introduce Onshore Power Supply (OPS) technology in early 2027 as part of its commitment to sustainable maritime practices. The EUR 11.5 million project, co-funded by Ports of Normandy and the Cotentin Urban Community, will facilitate shore-to-ship power connections, enabling vessels to reduce emissions while docked.

The designated OPS area will cover 800 square meters (8611 ft2) and include a cable management system alongside 4 connection sockets. Initial installations are slated to begin in autumn 2025, with completion expected by early 2027.

Julien Bougon, deputy director of the Cotentin Tourist Office, remarked that the OPS initiative represents a significant step in reducing CO2 emissions in Cherbourg and aligns with broader goals for a sustainable future.

Cherbourg has also completed several enhancements to support its cruise infrastructure:

  • New Cruise Shuttle Services: The introduction of a dedicated bus line with next-generation vehicles.
  • Terminal Parking Renovation: Upgrades to parking facilities at the cruise terminal.
  • Modernized Reception Area: A newly launched concept store within the terminal’s reception area.
  • “Cruise-Friendly” Membership Programme: An initiative to enhance the welcome experience for cruise passengers visiting Cherbourg.
