Rough seas cause vehicle damage and minor injury on Interislander ferry

   December 27, 2024 ,   Accidents

Several vehicles sustained damage, and one passenger sustained a minor injury on the Interislander-operated ferry Kaitaki (1995-built, IMO 9107942) during a crossing from Wellington to Picton (New Zealand) this morning.

The New Zealand-flagged vessel departed Wellington Harbour at 8:45 AM NZ (19:45 UTC) and encountered significant rolling near Karori Lighthouse. The movement caused some passenger vehicles to shift, resulting in damage.

Affected customers are being supported, and a thorough assessment is underway following the vessel's arrival in Picton. The injured passenger received immediate medical assistance from the crew.

Interislander (Cook Strait Ferries) issued guidance to passengers for managing seasickness on other scheduled sailings. The current adverse weather conditions include heavy rains, thunderstorms, strong winds, and large swells, particularly affecting central New Zealand.

Service updates posted on Interislander's website confirm the cancellation of the 6:15 a.m. Picton-to-Wellington sailing and the subsequent 11:00 a.m. return voyage due to rough seas.
