Huna Totem’s $80M cruise terminal enhances visitor experiences in Whittier (Alaska)

Huna Totem Corporation has introduced a new cruise terminal in Whittier (Alaska).

Situated in the remote Prince William Sound, ~60 miles southeast of Anchorage, the US$80 million facility features a double-berth pier and welcomed its first vessel in September.

The project is the result of a collaboration between the City of Whittier, NCLH-Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, and Huna Totem Corporation. Located on 20 acres of private land, the terminal lies nestled between tranquil waters and rugged mountains. NCLH holds the primary scheduling rights, but the facility is available for use by other cruise companies.

This addition complements Whittier’s existing dock, exclusively used by Princess Cruises and Holland America Line, and arrives at a time when cruise lines are seeking alternative ports following Juneau's introduction of a 5-ship daily cap.

The terminal’s design incorporates flexible spaces with movable partitions to create alcoves for hospitality services and regional excursion bookings. Plans are under consideration to adorn the facility with historical imagery and local artwork, offering visitors a deeper connection to Whittier’s unique setting.

The infrastructure also includes provisions for bus services and, in the near future, rail connections to Anchorage. Huna Totem has substantial land available for future development, with envisioned amenities such as retail outlets, dining venues, and a cultural center. More immediate plans involve adding fire pits, picnic areas, and expanding tour offerings, including kayak and JetSki rentals, charter fishing, and wildlife observation.

The terminal is expected to host 27 calls in 2025, accommodating vessels from Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas, and Oceania. Huna Totem Corporation, owned by ~1,600 shareholders of Indigenous heritage from Hoonah, has a history of developing cruise facilities in Alaska. This includes Icy Strait Point, which opened in 2004, and Port Klawock on Prince of Wales Island, which began operations in 2024. The new Whittier terminal further exemplifies Huna Totem’s commitment to promoting sustainable tourism and community engagement in Alaska’s coastal regions.
