Puerto Plata/Taino Bay (Dominicana) is poised to start 2025 with significant cruise activity as 81 ships are scheduled to call at its primary ports, Amber Cove and Taino Bay. January alone will see Amber Cove host 27 vessels, while Taino Bay is set to welcome 54, providing thousands of passengers the opportunity to experience the province’s scenic and cultural offerings.
Carlos Atahualpa Paulino, Regional Director of the Ministry of Tourism, highlighted the economic importance of cruise ships, emphasizing their role in fortifying Puerto Plata’s position as a vital tourism destination and driver of economic growth.
Amber Cove (operational since 2015) has been a cornerstone for cruise tourism in the northern Dominican Republic. This success has been amplified by the opening of Taino Bay in 2021, which has expanded the region’s capacity to accommodate cruise visitors.
In 2024, Dominicana recorded 11+ million tourist arrivals, contributing ~US$26 billion to its GDP and generating nearly 949,000 jobs. As Puerto Plata continues to grow and embrace sustainable tourism practices, the province remains integral to the country’s broader economic and tourism strategies.
