Port Funchal (Madeira Portugal) set a new benchmark in its cruise shipping operations, reaching 700,000 passengers for the first time on December 30th, 2024.

This milestone surpasses the previous record of 624,000 passengers in 2023, reflecting the destination’s growing prominence in the industry.

The landmark event was commemorated with the arrival of a passenger on AIDACosma ship, which docked in Funchal after departing Gran Canaria.

To mark the occasion, Paulo Fale (Director of Port Operations and Security at the Administration of Ports of Madeira /APRAM SA), and Patricia Bairrada (Commercial Director) presented the milestone passenger, a German national traveling with family, with a commemorative plaque and a basket of regional products. The recognition highlighted the port’s role in welcoming international visitors and fostering repeat tourism, as this visit marked the family's second trip to Madeira.

In 2023, Madeira hosted 279 ship calls and a record 624,400 passengers, in addition to 241,995 crew members. This steady growth underscores the island’s increasing appeal as a cruise destination.

The Port of Funchal’s success has also been recognized on the global stage. In 2024, the port received the "Best Cruise Terminal in the World for Sustainability" award from the World Cruise Awards. This accolade follows previous honors in 2022 and 2023, when Madeira was named Europe’s Best Cruise Destination.

Funchal's achievements reflect Madeira's strategic investment in sustainable infrastructure and its appeal as a premier cruise destination. With the sustained growth in passenger numbers and international recognition, the port is positioned to further strengthen its role as a key hub in global cruise tourism.
