RCI-Royal Caribbean International has notified guests aboard the Symphony of the Seas about 2 confirmed cases of Legionella involving previous passengers. According to the cruise line, the cases occurred on separate voyages - one in October and another in December. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not yet determined the source of the exposure.
In a letter addressed to passengers, Royal Caribbean highlighted its dedication to health and safety, explaining that it had implemented enhanced sanitation measures as a precaution and had followed CDC guidance. The cruise line emphasized that the cases do not necessarily confirm that the individuals contracted Legionella aboard the ship.
Royal Caribbean noted that while the source of the bacteria has not been established, it is taking proactive steps to ensure passenger safety. Legionella, the bacteria responsible for Legionnaires' disease, can cause a severe type of pneumonia when water droplets from contaminated sources, such as hot tubs, pools, fountains, or water systems, are inhaled. The disease is not contagious and typically affects those with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions. Healthy individuals exposed to the bacteria rarely develop the illness, but symptoms can include fever, chills, muscle aches, shortness of breath, and headaches.
The cruise line reassured guests that every possible measure is being taken to protect their health, with the crew fully committed to maintaining stringent sanitation protocols. Royal Caribbean acknowledged the effort and dedication of its staff in upholding health standards while providing passengers with a safe and enjoyable voyage.
To address concerns, the letter included guidance for guests who may have questions about Legionnaires’ disease. Passengers were encouraged to consult their healthcare providers or contact the CDC via its hotline or website. Additionally, the cruise line advised guests to monitor their health and report any concerning symptoms.
