Japanese shipbuilder Naikai Zosen Corporation has delivered a new LNG-powered Ro-Pax ferry, Sunflower Kamuy (IMO 9965306) to Mitsui OSK Lines/MOL for operation by its subsidiary MOL FERRY CO LTD (MOL Sunflower Ferries). The vessel marks the third LNG-fueled ferry in the MOL Sunflower fleet and reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable maritime transport.
Sunflower Kamuy measures 199.4 meters (~654 ft) in length overall, with a beam of 28.6 meters (~94 ft) and a draught of 6.87 meters (22.5 ft). The Japan-flagged ferry (MMSI 431025321) has volume 15600 GT-tons, passenger capacity 157 and wheeled cargo capacity 155 trailers.
Propulsion is provided by a low-speed dual-fuel engine capable of running on both LNG and diesel, offering operational flexibility and reduced emissions.
Designed for efficiency and passenger comfort, the vessel features a specialized bow to minimize wind and wave resistance, and a fin stabilizer to reduce rolling, ensuring smoother voyages.
The onboard facilities are fully accessible, catering to elderly passengers and those with reduced mobility.
Freight operations are streamlined with ramps located on the starboard side for efficient loading and unloading.
Sunflower Kamuy is the first of two units intended for MOL’s ferry route between Oarai and Tomakomai. The sistership - Sunflower Pirka (IMO 9965318), is slated for delivery in April 2025.
