European Waterways expands fleet with acquisition of Shannon Princess

   January 16, 2025 ,   Cruise Industry

European Waterways has expanded its fleet with the acquisition of Shannon Princess, Ireland's sole luxury hotel barge. The vessel, which has operated on Southern Ireland’s River Shannon since 2003, was previously owned and managed by Ruairi and Olivia Gibbons. While maintaining its established itinerary, European Waterways plans to gradually introduce enhancements to elevate the onboard experience.

The acquisition comes in response to increasing demand, with Shannon Princess often fully booked years in advance. To accommodate growing interest, European Waterways intends to extend the cruising season from 2025 onward. The expansion will be supported by the company’s experienced sales and reservations team, based in the U.K.

Shannon Princess accommodates up to 10 guests in spacious en-suite cabins and features a panoramic saloon, a spa-equipped sun deck, and ample outdoor dining and relaxation areas. A dedicated crew of 5 will continue providing attentive service, ensuring guests enjoy a seamless experience.

The vessel’s itinerary highlights the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the River Shannon, known for her verdant landscapes, charming villages, and historical significance. Guests can partake in curated activities such as private whiskey tastings at historic distilleries, guided tours of ancient castles, and opportunities for walking and fishing. Exclusive "Insider Experiences" include onboard cooking demonstrations, live traditional Irish music performances, and private visits to stately homes.

In keeping with European Waterways’ branding, Shannon Princess will adopt the company’s traditional blue, yellow, and red livery in preparation for the 2025 season. Planned future upgrades include refined interiors, expanded excursion options, and bespoke onboard experiences to enhance her reputation as a premier luxury barge cruising option in Ireland.
