An outbreak of gastrointestinal illness has affected passengers and crew aboard the Silversea Cruises vessel Silver Ray. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 38 passengers and 5 crew members out of 681 guests onboard reported symptoms, including diarrhea and abdominal cramping, during the vessel's current voyage.

The causative agent of the outbreak remains undetermined. The Silver Ray departed Callao (Peru) on January 4th, 2025, and is scheduled to arrive at Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades, Florida) on Monday, January 20th.

Silversea Cruises has implemented enhanced sanitation measures in response to the outbreak, including isolating affected individuals, as part of its standard health protocols. The cruise line has not yet issued a public comment on the incident.

This marks the second gastrointestinal illness outbreak aboard a cruise ship reported in 2025. The CDC documented 18 outbreaks on cruise ships in 2024, with the majority linked to norovirus, highlighting the continued challenges of managing illness in the cruise industry.
