The France-based Compagnie du Ponant, a major luxury expedition cruise company, acquired a majority stake in Aqua Expeditions/fleet. Renowned for its river and ocean expeditions in biodiversity-rich regions such as South America, Southeast Asia, and beyond, Aqua Expeditions will continue to operate as a destination specialist under its existing brand name.
The acquisition, backed by Artemis Group (Pinault family’s investment company) signals an expansion strategy for Aqua Expeditions. Currently operating vessels in destinations such as the Galapagos, Raja Ampat, Komodo, the Spice Islands, the Mekong River, and the Peruvian Amazon, the company will now further its reach globally.
Francesco Galli Zugaro, Aqua Expeditions’ CEO and Founder, will remain a shareholder and continue to lead the company with his senior management team. Aqua Expeditions will operate as a standalone business unit within the Ponant Explorations Group.
This acquisition coincides with Aqua Expeditions’ launch of its East Africa itineraries, focusing on the Seychelles and Tanzania, with particular emphasis on the Aldabra group of islands, underscoring the brand’s commitment to expanding its portfolio of unique travel experiences.
