Chinese officials marked a significant achievement on January 15th, 2025, by completing the first phase of construction for China's second large cruise ship. This milestone underscores the growing capabilities of China’s shipbuilding industry, particularly in the complex field of cruise ship construction.

The new vessel is being constructed for Adora Cruises, a subsidiary of CSSC with Carnival Corporation as a minority stakeholder. This marks the second large ocean-going cruise ship built by CSSC.

Named Adora Flora City in October 2024, the vessel will measure 141,800 GT-tons/volume and 1119 ft (341 m) in length, making it 57 ft (17.4 m) longer than its predecessor and sistership Adora Magic City. The passenger capacity has also been increased to 5232 guests.

During the milestone presentation, Chinese officials emphasized the efficiency of the construction process, noting that it now aligns with the timelines achieved by leading European shipbuilders. The progress reflects China’s mastery of critical cruise ship technologies, considered significantly more complex than those required for constructing containerships or tankers. Cruise ships demand intricate hotel systems and advanced interiors, often relying on extensive supplier networks and subcontractors, as seen in European shipyards.

CSSC initially collaborated with Italy’s Fincantieri to develop its cruise ship construction expertise. The current cruise ship designs are derived from a class originally created by Fincantieri and Carnival Corporation, and previously utilized by CCL-Carnival Cruise Line and Costa Cruises. To support these projects, CSSC has invested heavily in specialized facilities tailored to the unique demands of cruise ship fabrication.

The vessel, colloquially referred to as Aida Huacheng, introduces several design refinements over the earlier model. Notable enhancements include an additional 19 staterooms, bringing the total to 2144, as well as a broader variety of suites. The atrium lobby has been doubled in size, and public spaces, entertainment venues, and leisure areas have been comprehensively upgraded.

Among its unique features is the Sea Street Garden, a multifunctional social hub inspired by Guangzhou, known as the “Flower City.” This space is designed to adapt throughout the day, offering entertainment, leisure, and social interaction alongside a cafe.

Adora Cruises has already established a presence in China’s cruise market, with the Adora Mediterranea (formerly Costa Mediterranea) launching voyages from Guangzhou in 2024. The Adora Magic City continues to operate out of Shanghai, having completed 84 voyages and welcomed ~600,000 tourists during her inaugural year.

The new ship is now moving into its second construction phase, which will focus on interior decoration, equipment installation, and systems commissioning. A critical milestone, the first dock flotation test, is scheduled for the end of April 2025, with delivery anticipated by late 2026.
