In 2024, Malta achieved a record-breaking year in cruise passenger numbers, surpassing the pre-COVID peak recorded in 2019. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett, and Valletta Cruise Port CEO Stephen Xuereb announced the milestone during a visit to Valletta Cruise Port.
940,000+ passenger movements were registered at the port, reflecting a 4% increase over the previous record set in 2019. Throughout the year, the Grand Harbour welcomed 357 cruise ship calls, solidifying Malta’s reputation as a key cruise destination in the Mediterranean.
The cruise industry remains a vital contributor to the Maltese economy, bolstering sectors such as shipping services, retail, catering, and tourism in Valletta and the Grand Harbour region. Cruise ship operations at the Grand Harbour generate an estimated EUR 88 million annually, with EUR 38 million attributed to passenger spending and EUR 50 million to cruise line expenditures. Deputy Prime Minister Borg emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting this sector and enhancing the overall experience for cruise passengers during their visits to the Maltese Islands.
In 2024, the Malta Tourism Authority actively promoted Malta as a premier Mediterranean cruise destination. Participation in leading international industry fairs and targeted marketing campaigns played a pivotal role in encouraging cruise operators and travelers to include Malta in their itineraries.
Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett highlighted the strides made in sustainability with the implementation of Malta’s shore-to-ship power infrastructure. The system, capable of powering up to 5 cruise liners simultaneously, is projected to reduce pollution in the Grand Harbour area by 90% by 2030, improving the quality of life for thousands of residents in nearby communities.
Bonett also underscored the strategic importance of the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) project, positioning Malta as the first Mediterranean port to adopt such technology. This initiative, alongside the extension of Quay Pinto 4-5, demonstrates Malta’s leadership in sustainable maritime solutions and reinforces the government’s commitment to the long-term growth of the maritime industry.
