Iceland has implemented a new "infrastructure fee" in 2025, applicable to cruise ship tourists staying within the country’s territorial waters.
Replacing the abolished accommodation tax, the fee is set at 2500 Icelandic Krona (~EUR 18) per person per day and applies to all passengers, irrespective of whether they disembark or remain on board.
For instance, passengers on a 4-day cruise, such as MSC Preziosa, which will dock in Iceland starting June 9th, 2025, can expect to pay a total of ~EUR 70. This amount will be automatically charged to their onboard accounts upon the ship’s departure from Icelandic waters. MSC has confirmed that the fee is mandatory for all guests and is independent of shore excursions or other land-based activities.
The introduction of this fee reflects the Icelandic government’s efforts to address the increasing demands of tourism and support the development of the island’s infrastructure. By ensuring all cruisers contribute equally, regardless of their level of participation in onshore activities, the fee aims to mitigate the impact of growing visitor numbers on Iceland’s natural and urban resources.
