Port of Bilbao (Spain) advances with shore power and solar energy integration

Port Bilbao (Spain) received authorization to develop a photovoltaic (PV) solar plant to provide renewable energy for vessels berthed at 2 of its 3 cruise docks - Getxo 2 and Getxo 3.

This project represents a significant step toward implementing a shore power supply system powered by green energy, aligning with broader maritime sustainability goals.

The electrification project, funded jointly by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and the Bilbao Port Authority, is currently in the tendering phase. According to Port officials, the planning and approval process for the construction will take approximately six months, with the installation phase expected to span 24 months.

Both the dock electrification and the PV solar panels are projected to be operational by 2027.

The cruise terminal will feature three shore power connection points, enabling two vessels to connect simultaneously. At the Getxo 3 berth, two connection points will be installed, although only one will be in use at a time to power vessels.

The connection points will be designed for maximum operational flexibility, incorporating a mobile system with a 50-meter range on either side of the connection point, resulting in a total coverage area of 100 meters per unit. The system will support supply voltages of 6.6 kV and 11 kV, with frequencies of 50 Hz or 60 Hz, and a maximum installed capacity of 16 MVA per berth.

The PV solar plant will be located on the roofs of the terminal car park, with a total output of 0.5 megawatts. While the exact number of panels has yet to be determined, they will extend across the entire length of the car park, optimizing available space for renewable energy generation.

On November 28th, Spain’s Council of Ministers, acting on a proposal from the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, approved a EUR 13 million investment for the “BilbOPS” project, marking a major commitment to sustainable port operations.

Beyond infrastructure improvements, the Port is enhancing its appeal to cruise tourists by offering unique local experiences. One such initiative involves the Athletic Club Bilbao, one of Spain’s most iconic football clubs. Known for its cantera (youth academy) policy and its recruitment of players exclusively from the Basque region, the club now welcomes visitors with a guided tour of its museum and stadium.

Tickets for the tour are priced at EUR 15 and include an English audio guide. The venue, which provides ample coach parking, is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 06:00 p.m., except on Mondays and match days. This offering is expected to enrich the cultural and leisure experiences available to cruise passengers visiting the region.

With the BilbOPS project and enhanced passenger offerings, the Port of Bilbao continues to position itself as a leader in sustainable and passenger-focused cruise operations.
