For the first time in its history, RCI-Royal Caribbean will homeport a cruise ship in San Diego (California USA), beginning in October 2026. Serenade of the Seas will be based at the Southern California port for its inaugural season, operating a series of 3-, 4-, and 7-night cruises to the Mexican Riviera.
The addition of Serenade of the Seas to the West Coast fleet expands options for regional cruisers, who traditionally have fewer choices compared to those on the East Coast. The ship, launched in 2003, will provide an alternative for passengers seeking shorter itineraries from San Diego.
Royal Caribbean has indicated that the 2026-2027 season is aimed at increasing the availability of its sailings for West Coast travelers, giving them more opportunities to experience the cruise line’s offerings. San Diego’s proximity to a major airport, located just 3 miles from the cruise terminal, makes it a convenient departure point for both local and international passengers. Visitors to the city can also take advantage of its diverse attractions, including beaches, historic districts such as Old Town and the Gaslamp Quarter, and a vibrant culinary scene.
Following her Alaska season from Vancouver BC, Serenade of the Seas will be one of 5 Royal Caribbean vessels operating on the West Coast from summer 2026 through winter 2026-2027. However, she will be the only ship sailing from San Diego. Other ships in the region - Quantum OTS, Ovation OTS, Navigator OTS, and Voyager OTS - will homeport in Los Angeles CA.
Navigator OTS currently offers year-round sailings from LA, while Voyager OTS will join the fleet for the winter of 2026-2027 after completing her Alaska season from Seattle WA.
Royal Caribbean has recently increased its presence on the West Coast, announcing in 2024 that Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas would be relocated from the Asia-Pacific region to Los Angeles in June and October 2025, respectively. These deployments mark the first time vessels of that size will sail from Los Angeles CA, with Quantum of the Seas scheduled to remain there through at least summer 2026. Ovation of the Seas will return for winter 2026-2027 following deployments in Asia and Alaska.
