Swedish ferry operator Stena Line has launched its second methanol-ready NewMax hybrid ferry at China Merchants Jingling Shipyard. Following the launch, the shipyard will proceed with the installation of the vessel’s interior before its scheduled delivery in early 2026.
Named Stena Connecta, the ferry is one of two newly ordered vessels designated for the Belfast–Heysham route, a critical trade link across the Irish Sea. Her sistership, Stena Futura, is currently undergoing outfitting and is expected to enter service in autumn 2025.
Designed to operate on methanol fuel, both hybrid vessels incorporate technologies that enable battery propulsion and shore power utilization where infrastructure permits. Stena Line has emphasized its collaboration with methanol suppliers to secure future volumes of e-methanol as part of its objective to reduce CO₂ emissions by 30% by 2030.
Stena Connecta will also feature rotor sails, utilizing wind energy to provide auxiliary propulsion, thereby improving fuel efficiency and lowering emissions. Stena Line’s CEO, Niclas Martensson, highlighted the significance of the launch, describing it as an important milestone in the company’s NewMax fleet investment program. He noted that demand on the Belfast–Heysham route has increased in recent years and expressed confidence that the additional capacity would be well received. He also reaffirmed Stena Line’s commitment to sustainability, stating that these hybrid vessels represent a key step in the company’s broader strategy to transition toward renewable fuels and strengthen its leadership in sustainable shipping.
