In 2024, Cozumel solidified its position as the world's third-busiest cruise port, welcoming 4.6+ million passengers across 1,281 cruise ship calls.
This island, situated off the Yucatan Peninsula, is renowned for its white sand beaches and vibrant coral reefs, attracting snorkelers and divers eager to explore its diverse marine life. Major cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean and Carnival, collaborate with local operators to offer tailored excursions, ensuring guests can experience the island's attractions before returning to their ships each evening.
As the spring break season approaches, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico has issued a travel advisory for Americans planning visits in March and April. While Cozumel's insular nature and status as a prominent tourist destination generally contribute to its safety, the advisory emphasizes that crime, including violent incidents, can occur anywhere in Mexico.
Travelers are encouraged to remain vigilant and stay informed about their surroundings during their stay.
"Citizens should exercise caution in the downtown areas of popular spring break spots," the advisory reads. "This includes Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum, especially after dark."
