In recent weeks, the Greek island of Santorini has experienced a significant reduction in seismic activity following an earthquake swarm that began in late January 2025. This decline has prompted several thousand residents to return to their homes, with schools scheduled to reopen on March 4th, implementing earthquake preparedness protocols to ensure student safety.
Despite the resumption of daily life for residents, the Greek Maritime Ministry's temporary ban on cruise ship dockings at Santorini's ports remains in effect. This precautionary measure, implemented amid ongoing seismic activity, aims to ensure the safety of passengers and the island's infrastructure.
Consequently, cruise lines have adjusted their itineraries. For instance, Viking Cruises, which had 2 scheduled calls in Santorini for March, has rerouted these voyages to alternative destinations such as Kusadasi (Ephesus) and Nafplion.
The situation continues to evolve, with authorities closely monitoring seismic activity to determine when it will be safe to lift restrictions on maritime tourism.
