Mitsui Ocean Cruises expands fleet with acquisition of Seabourn Sojourn

Mitsui Ocean Cruises continues to strengthen its presence in the high-end cruise market with the acquisition of Seabourn Sojourn from Carnival Corporation. This latest addition marks the company’s second purchase from Seabourn, following its acquisition of Seabourn Odyssey (now Mitsui Ocean Fuji) in 2023. The Sojourn is set to undergo extensive refurbishment before entering service tailored to the Japanese market.

Despite the change in ownership, Seabourn Sojourn will continue operating under the Seabourn brand for an extended period. Mitsui Ocean Cruises officially took possession of the vessel on February 28th, yet Seabourn has secured a charter agreement allowing it to retain the ship for scheduled itineraries, including a world cruise that will conclude in May 2026. This arrangement provides Seabourn with continued operational stability while affording Mitsui ample time to prepare the vessel for its transition.

Upon completing its charter obligations, Seabourn Sojourn will undergo an extensive refit before re-entering service under Mitsui Ocean Cruises. The vessel is expected to operate short- to mid-length luxury cruises, catering exclusively to the Japanese market. With the successful introduction of Mitsui Ocean Fuji - formerly Seabourn Odyssey - in 2023, Mitsui is leveraging its growing expertise to enhance its latest acquisition.

Mitsui Ocean Cruises is not alone in its efforts to expand Japan’s premium cruise offerings. NYK Line is preparing to launch Asuka III in July 2025, while Ryobi Holdings is set to debut a luxury yacht-style cruise vessel in 2027. With increased investment in the sector, Japan’s cruise industry is poised for significant growth, offering refined maritime experiences for the domestic market.
