The Port of Torshavn (Faroe Islands) is constructing a DKK 70 million (EUR 9.4 million) terminal, scheduled for completion in June 2026, to augment capacity following its 2022 expansion. The new facility will serve both cruise passengers and international ferry traffic, a departure from prior infrastructure focused solely on single-use operations.

Spanning 2,000 m2 of terminal space within a 7,000 m2 structure, the building will include office facilities for a Faroese roro/ropax operator. A key feature, according to Port Director Hanus Mikkelsen, is the use of ocean thermal energy conversion for heating - a system already implemented in a separate 7,000 m2 port-owned office building, reducing environmental impact.

The terminal is co-owned with Smyril Line, which operates roro cargo vessels and a ropax ferry. Ferry passengers will access the facility via gangways, while cruise travelers will be shuttled from shipside.

Despite the Faroe Islands’ Schengen membership, the terminal will host dedicated immigration and customs facilities to address prior inadequacies. Mikkelsen highlighted the upgrade as critical for operational efficiency, particularly with the upcoming EU Entry/Exit System. The new infrastructure aims to streamline processing for non-EU passengers transiting through the region.
