Barbados recently welcomed the Mitsui Ocean Fuji, Japan’s most luxurious cruise vessel, reinforcing the island’s status as a premier Caribbean destination. The ship, which entered service in December 2024, included Barbados as one of only two Caribbean ports on its special voyage.

Formerly known as MV Seabourn Odyssey, the vessel previously sailed under Seabourn before being acquired by Mitsui Ocean Cruises. Following its final Seabourn voyage in September 2024, the ship underwent extensive renovations in Yokohama (Japan) where it was transformed into an all-suite luxury cruise ship designed to serve the Japanese market.

This visit, outside of standard cruise itineraries, marked a significant milestone for Barbados, highlighting its ability to attract high-end international cruise lines. During the port call, passengers experienced the island’s cultural heritage, including traditional music and dance performances, as well as visits to local markets showcasing Barbadian craftsmanship and products.

A delegation of Barbadian and Japanese officials welcomed the ship, including representatives from Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), Barbados Port Inc. (BPI), the Japanese Embassy, and Japan’s Ambassador to Barbados, Miyasaka Yusuke. Ms. Alleyne of BTMI acknowledged the significance of the visit, noting that it reflected Barbados’ growing prominence in the global cruise industry and the success of collaborative tourism efforts. Ambassador Miyasaka expressed his appreciation for the warm reception and hoped the visiting Japanese guests would gain a deeper appreciation of the island.

The Mitsui Ocean Fuji offers a refined cruising experience with 7 categories of suites, catering to travelers seeking premium accommodations. As Japan’s second luxury cruise ship and the first of its kind to operate from Japan, its itinerary underscores Barbados’ growing appeal among high-end international cruise operators. Following its departure from Barbados, the vessel continued to its next and final Caribbean destination, Curacao.
