On Sunday, March 23, Santorini Island marked the commencement of its cruise season with the arrival of the Celestyal Discovery ship, carrying approximately 1,700 passengers, predominantly from the USA.

This event signifies a pivotal step toward normalcy following the series of minor earthquakes that impacted the region in February.

The seismic events had previously led to emergency measures, including evacuations and a temporary suspension of tourist activities. Despite these challenges, Santorini reported no significant structural damage, and local enterprises are now preparing to welcome visitors for the upcoming Easter period.

In anticipation of increased tourist arrivals, authorities have implemented new operational protocols to manage visitor traffic effectively over the next two months. These measures aim to ensure a seamless experience for both tourists and residents as the island reopens its doors.

Looking ahead, Santorini is set to receive 35 cruise ships in April, with bookings indicating a projected 10% increase in cruise traffic and passenger numbers compared to the previous year. This upward trend underscores the island's enduring appeal and resilience in the face of recent challenges.

The resumption of cruise activities not only revitalizes Santorini's tourism sector but also reinforces its status as a premier destination in the Aegean Sea. As the season progresses, the island remains vigilant, with scientists continuing to monitor seismic activity to ensure the safety and well-being of both residents and visitors.
