Avalon Waterways expands to Bordeaux with new river cruise itinerary

Avalon Waterways has officially launched homeporting operations from Bordeaux (France), introducing a new itinerary along the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers.

Following the inaugural voyage, the company has commenced its first official sailing of "Bonjour Bordeaux: Chateaux, Wineries & Charming Villages" itinerary with the newly refurbished Avalon Artistry II.

This new itinerary marks a significant expansion for Avalon Waterways, offering guests a structured exploration of Bordeaux’s renowned wine region. The journey combines Château visits, vineyard cycling, regional tastings, and guided excursions through historic villages, delivering an immersive experience in Avalon’s signature cruising style.

Voyage highlights include:

  • Embarkation in Bordeaux. Passengers board the 128-passenger Avalon Artistry II, their home for a week-long voyage through France’s celebrated wine country.
  • Cadillac-sur-Garonne: Châteaux & Sauternes. Ashore in Cadillac-sur-Garonne, guests visit Château de la Brède, the birthplace of philosopher Montesquieu, followed by a tasting of the region’s distinguished Sauternes wine at a local vineyard.
  • Cussac Fort Medoc: Vines & Views. The cruise continues to Cussac Fort Médoc, where guests may explore vineyards by e-bike or visit a historic château for tastings of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • Blaye & Bourg: Coastal Scenery and Cognac. A guided tour of the UNESCO-listed Citadel of Blaye provides historical insights, complemented by a scenic drive along the Route de la Corniche. In Bourg, guests have free time or may opt for a visit to the Rémy Martin distillery for a Cognac tasting.
  • Saint-Emilion: History & Gastronomy. Ashore in Saint-Émilion, a guided tour highlights the medieval village’s architecture and winemaking heritage. Optional activities include a pastry-making class or a Bordeaux chateau visit for a chocolate and wine pairing.
  • Bordeaux: City Exploration. A walking tour through Bordeaux reveals its historic squares and grand avenues. Guests may further explore Marché des Capucins, the city's central food market, or visit Les Bassins de Lumières, an immersive digital art installation in a former submarine base.
  • Arcachon: Oyster Tasting by the Sea. A full-day excursion to the coastal town of Arcachon offers the opportunity to visit an oyster farm and sample the region’s famed delicacy. Guests preferring to remain in Bordeaux may enjoy independent exploration, including a bike ride along Les Quais.
