MS The World, recognized as the largest privately-owned residential vessel currently in operation, is scheduled to enter dry-dock at the Navantia Shipyard in Cádiz (Spain) for a planned 6-week maintenance and upgrade period. This 2025 refit reflects the vessel’s standard triennial dry-dock cycle, focused on sustaining operational integrity, enhancing onboard systems, and implementing long-term sustainability measures.

This dry-dock period will incorporate a broad range of structural, mechanical, and aesthetic upgrades. Key among these is the installation of a High Voltage Shore Connection (HVSC) system, enabling The World to utilize shore power while docked. This measure allows for generator shutdowns in port, significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions, aligning the vessel with shore power mandates in jurisdictions such as California and Europe.

Hull efficiency improvements are also scheduled, including the replacement of the vessel’s bulbous bow. The new design, optimized for reduced operating speeds, is expected to decrease hull resistance by approximately 10%, with corresponding reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. The application of a silicone-based antifouling coating will further reduce hydrodynamic drag and marine biofouling, enhancing fuel efficiency and minimizing required maintenance.

Additional upgrades include replacement of chillers and fan coil units (FCUs) to improve HVAC system efficiency, along with various refurbishments to hospitality spaces. Deck 11’s Pool Bar & Grill will be reconfigured to optimize food service operations and increase guest capacity, featuring a larger bar, expanded pantry, and new galley equipment. The addition of a watertight canopy and new furnishings will modernize the area while improving functionality.

On Deck 12, the putting green will be resurfaced and re-contoured to replicate land-based greens more closely. Adjacent to this area, a golf simulator will be installed within The World Golf Club, offering residents a virtual experience of over 100 courses worldwide. The simulator will feature ball-tracking technology for improved training and recreational play. It also includes functionality for additional sports-based activities.

In the ship’s wellness facilities, modifications will include the addition of a cold plunge pool within the Aqua Spa, supporting thermal therapy circuits. Treatment rooms will receive heated flooring for comfort enhancement, while the onboard salon will undergo surface and equipment updates.

Marine operations will benefit from the addition of a custom-configured 10-seat Zodiac Pro 850. This rigid inflatable will support near-shore and expeditionary landings, as well as wildlife observation excursions in remote locations not accessible by the primary vessel. The Zodiac’s design prioritizes stability, maneuverability, and extended operational range.

The ship’s elevators will undergo a systems upgrade in collaboration with KONE, enhancing safety, ride quality, and maintenance reliability. These technical improvements are essential to maintain efficiency and passenger mobility throughout the vessel’s multiple decks.

As part of the broader refit scope, approximately 50 private residences aboard The World will receive varying levels of refurbishment. Work includes replacement of flooring, cabinetry, soft furnishings, and installation of modern appliances. Select bathrooms will be upgraded with new sanitary ware and walk-in showers. These updates ensure continued livability and compliance with contemporary residential standards at sea.

In recognition of the vessel’s rigorous maintenance program, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) will issue a Statement of Extended Life. Following an extensive assessment, DNV has determined that the vessel’s physical condition aligns with that of a ship just 5.6 years old—substantially below her chronological age—affirming her structural longevity and overall sustainability performance.

Upon completion of this dry-dock period, The World will re-enter service with enhanced environmental compliance, operational efficiency, and resident amenities. She remains the only 100% residential mega yacht in continuous operation, offering a global itinerary and long-range capability for her private community of residents.
