The Greek marine fuel supplier Coral Marine Products SA (part of Coral SA) announced on April 8th that it had executed the first delivery of a marine fuel blend incorporating biofuels in Greece.
The delivery involved the Celestyal Discovery ship, which became the first one in Greek waters to be fueled by a combination of conventional marine diesel and biofuel—a blend credited with reducing CO2 emissions by roughly 21%.
The operation was carried out in association with the Greek multinational energy group Motor Oil. Notably, the biofuel, produced in Greece from recycled used cooking oils by Verd—a Motor Oil subsidiary—is classified as a second-generation fuel. This environmentally conscious fuel does not interfere with agricultural production and complies with the new ISO 8217:2024 standards, ensuring both high performance and operational safety.
Coral Marine further clarified that this initiative supports the International Maritime Organization’s objectives for cutting CO emissions within the maritime industry.
