Dry dock overhaul of The World: comprehensive refurbishment at Navantia Shipyard

   April 23, 2025 ,   Cruise Industry

The residential cruise vessel The World has entered dry dock at the Navantia Shipyard in Cádiz, Spain, for a scheduled 6-week refit valued at over US$30 million. This extensive maintenance period is focused on both environmental retrofitting and interior enhancements, aligning the vessel with current regulatory frameworks and operational efficiency standards.

A key component of the refit is the integration of a High Voltage Shore Connection (HVSC) system—also referred to as “cold ironing”—which will allow the vessel to draw electrical power from shore-based infrastructure while berthed. This system significantly reduces fuel use and emissions during port stays and ensures compliance with port regulations in jurisdictions such as California and the European Union.

In support of decarbonization goals, a redesigned bow bulb will be installed. The modification, aimed at optimizing hydrodynamic performance for the vessel’s current operational speeds (reduced from its original 19-knot design), is expected to reduce hull drag by approximately 10%. This, in turn, will contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions during transit. Additionally, a silicone-based antifouling coating will be applied to the hull to reduce biofouling and further minimize resistance through the water.

Approximately 50 private residences onboard will undergo significant refurbishment. These upgrades include the installation of new flooring, cabinetry, closets, and modern appliances in both living and sleeping quarters. Selected units will also receive updated furniture and wall treatments.

Public and recreational areas are also being improved. Notable refurbishments include the Pool Bar & Grill and the ship’s putting green. Two new amenities will be introduced: a golf simulator for virtual practice and a cold plunge pool designed to support wellness routines.

Routine dry dock maintenance procedures are being carried out to ensure the continued seaworthiness and technical integrity of the vessel. This includes a complete modernization of the ship’s elevator systems.

Additionally, The World will enhance its expedition capabilities with the addition of a new 10-passenger Zodiac boat, broadening the vessel’s capacity for shore landings in remote regions.

Upon completion of the dry dock period, The World is expected to re-enter service with improved environmental performance, upgraded accommodations, and expanded resident amenities—positioning it for continued global operations with a focus on sustainability and onboard comfort.
