The Southwest Harbor Board of Selectman has unanimously voted in favor of a moratorium to ban cruise liners Tuesday night (July 18) following controversy over the proposal to anchor a 300-foot vessel there.
According to town officials, the vote came after Harbor Committee's recommendation and large public turnout in opposition to the Pearl Sea Cruises ship Pearl Mist.
Community members feared allowing the vessel would open the door for more big ships in the future and could negatively impact the otherwise "quiet" town.
A special meeting will be held on July 25 for voters to approve the wording of moratorium.
