The number of cruise passengers stopping off in port of Orkney has increased largely in recent years. The tourist raid, however, has not all been just sailing.
In 2017, a total of 140 cruise ships will berth at Hatston pier, situated on the outskirts of Kirkwall, the largest town on mainland Orkney.
Over 130,000 travellers are expected during this season, between the beginning of April and the end of September, 6 times the population of entire Orkney archipelago, that lies around 10 miles off the northern tip of Scotland.
In 2011, the number of cruise ship visits for the whole year was just 36,000.
