The brand new cruise quay in Visby opened on Sunday, April 29, in connection with the call at the port by AIDAdiva.
The venture is constructed via the collaboration between Region Gotland and CMP (CopenhagenMalmo Port), with Region Gotland building the new quay and CMP taking responsibility for the operation.
Both parties, together with Gotland Cruise Network, are currently marketing Gotland as a destination.
Work on the new cruise quay in Visby started in February 2016, and has currently been opened for arrivals in accordance with the schedule. AIDAdiva was the 2nd ship to have docked at the quay, after Astoria visited Gotland on April 16.
90 arrivals with around 90,000 passengers are due to visit Gotland during 2018 cruise season. The purpose is to reach a total of 150,000 passengers within several years.
Sustainability issues played a major role in the project. The vessels that come to Visby port can empty their waste water into the underground basin, from where it's pumped onward to sewage works. The sludge can be used in biogas production on Gotland.
A pair of 340 metre long liners can dock simultaneously at the new cruise quay. Including abutments, it extends about 600 m out into the sea. The 300 m2 terminal that is adjacent to the quay is intended for services for cruise passengers and crew.
